For it's first two generations, the Cougar was derived from the Ford Mustang which was initially developed as a pony car. Intended for a market position between the Ford Mustang and the Ford Thunderbird, the Cougar was intended as a "plush" pony car. While offering more comfort and features than the Mustang, the model line was tuned for better road manners than the Thunderbird. The Mercury Cougar was introduced by the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford on September 30, 1966. Far exceeding initial sales projections, the Cougar accounted for nearly 40% of 1967 Lincoln-Mercury sales, and the Cougar received the 1967 'Motor Trend Car-of-the-Year' award (the first Lincoln-Mercury vehicle to do so).

Initially developed as a rebadged version of the Mustang, the 1967 Cougar received its own body design from the ground up, though the popular "long-hood, short-deck" proportions of the Mustang remained. The model line was marketed as having 'European' style and features. The first Lincoln-Mercury vehicle with hidden headlamps, the front fascia was distinguished by a split 'electric shaver' grille, featuring vertically slatted chrome trim. The rear fascia was styled similar, concealing dark-lens taillamps behind vertically-slatted trim; sequential turn signals were standard (adopting the mechanism from the Thunderbird).

This '68 Mercury was manufactured in Ford's San Jose, California plant in December 1968 as a Cougar 2-dr hardtop coupe. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Seafoam Green with Light Ivy Gold interior trim and Black vinyl roof. It was fitted with a 302-2v V8 engine, C4 automatic transmission paired to a 3.50:1 ratio differential and delivered to the Los Angeles, California DSO, where it was sold and spent most it's life until the last decade where it has resided in Washington State.

This is a NUMBER'S MATCHING car which runs, drives & stops very well. It has recently undergone a repaint to the colour of Meadowlark Yellow, which looks only average, before the owner decided to stop and on-sell. It needs finishing touches including putting the rear window in place after refitting the vinyl roof. All rubbers & trimmings are in the trunk of the car, along with a new Black vinyl top for recovering (if so desired). Carpet & headliner could also do with replacing. The undercarriage is very solid as you would expect from the sunny & dry side of the US; there is some minor rust in the A-pillars, some small holes in the passenger side rear floor and a little dirt; but amazingly there is very little in the way of corrosion with the rest of the floor pans & frame rails being in great shape. The front suspension will require the usual attention like upper ball joints & lower control arms replacement. There is no doubt that this car has been garage or barn stored for many years.

This car is no trailer queen but the originality and natural good looks will turn heads. Make no mistakes though, it is in the running / driving Restorer category.
