This is the car that started it all. From breaking sales records to re-imagining a whole segment of the auto industry, it started with the Mustang. This one is the 773rd Mustang produced in San Jose on just the 3rd day of production on July 17th of 1964.
This Mustang was built in Ford's San Jose, Northern California plant on the 17th July 1964 and featured Caspian Blue paint matched to White crinkle vinyl upholstery with standard front bucket seats. It was powered by a 4.7L 'D-Code' 289cui V8 Windsor small block engine, matched with a 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission and paired to a conventional rear differential with 3.00:1 highway gearing. It was delivered and sold into the Seattle, Washington State DSO on the Pacific North-West coast of the US where it has resided all its life.
The 'D-code' engine is perhaps the rarest of all from the Mustangs 1964 production year. The D-code was meant to be a kind of intermediate engine. For people who wanted a V8 with a four-barrel carburetor but who didnt want to splurge for the high-performance K-code at 271hp, the D-code was a kind of compromise. Though it had the same displacement as the K-code engine, and it also was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor, the D-code engine produced less horsepower at 210hp with a 9.00:1 compression ratio.
The rotisserie restoration on this car was completed in 2020, and since completion less than 200 miles have been added to the odometer. A book of receipts totals over $48K spent, and that doesn't even include the assembly labour. The car was built by a former MCA judge, and it took 3rd place at the Mustang Club of America Concours Trailered Class in Tucson, AZ. This is a nice proper car that can win some trophies at shows, attract attention at 'cars & coffee' events and provide you with years of enjoyment with no looming projects required.
The paint is in great condition, replicating a true OEM 1960's finish. The original bumpers were re-chromed and the stainless window trim was highly polished. The emblems are all in amazing condition as well. This one looks fantastic!
Inside the interior is all new. The seat upholstery is stretched over firm new seat cushions. New 64 1/2 specific carpet is in place along with new kick panels, door panels, dash pad, headliner, instrument cluster, etc. It really feels like you took a time machine back to your Ford dealers show room in mid-summer '64.
Under the bonnet the 289 V8 is adorned with all the proper bolts, brackets, clamps & fasteners. Even the generator wears its correct decals and early production super rare generator pulley. The engine fires up easily and has a very unique sound. The Mustang's had a small muffler in front of the axle then a larger transverse unit behind the axle. The exhaust is all concours correct as well.
The 4-speed transmission is a huge bonus in this model. This car has the correct Reverse Lock-Out 'T' handle that works nicely. The transmission itself works well shifting both up and down the pattern.
This was a rotisserie restoration and the bottom of the car has been repainted to match its original color and sheen. This was very early in production so some aspects are different than later production. The floors are as they were, shiny gray. Pictures of the car on the rotisserie prior to restoration show this.
This is not a perfect car, just a really nice one. There are paint imperfections and a couple of panel alignments that could be addressed to make the car even more impressive but these cars were not perfect back in the day when they left the factory. Certainly nothing but a critical eye can find, but worth mentioning.
